The Science Behind Performance-Driven Insoles

Performance Science

Insoles as performance gear is a new item to the athlete. Insoles have traditionally been used as a solution to painful foot conditions and overuse injuries, and for better foot comfort. Cluffy has expanded indications for their insole to help the athlete with balance, knee stability and whole-body strength.

Stability in the foot...

We do this in a unique manner by restoring a stable tripod of pressure points from the heel to just behind the big toe and then again behind the little toe. (Figure 2) To get these three pressure points to be stable, we have developed a unique arch platform that can allow the foot to adapt to stresses applied with walking, running, jumping and lateral movement of the athlete. Understanding how the foot moves with normal function allowed us to create the unique arch platform and design features of the Cluffy insoles. (Figure 3)

The Foot's Movement...

Figure 4. Movement of the foot.

Proper foot movement is crucial for a variety of reasons, impacting performance, injury prevention, and overall athletic development. Optimal foot movement ensures efficient energy transfer during athletic activities. (Figure 4).

Proper alignment and movement patterns can maximize this energy transfer, allowing athletes to perform at their best, whether sprinting, jumping, or changing direction, that requires a stable platform. (Figure 5). If the athletes foot movement is compromised, it can lead to instability, making them more susceptible to falls and poor performance.

The foot is a mobile adapter as it moves in different ways. (Figure 6). Our design and materials do not interfere with this normal motion. You will never find hard plastics in our insoles for this reason, only materials and designs that allow the foot to move and adapt normally during sports. Guiding the foot to do what it is designed to do, whether on ice, field, court, gym, mat, road, ring, hill, track, or floor.

In addition to performance, proper foot movement plays a significant role in injury prevention. Incorrect foot movement can lead to overuse injuries such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and other injuries to the feet and legs. Cluffy insoles support proper alignment and movement patterns, which are essential for avoiding injuries that can sideline an athlete for extended time periods.
